Fishing in Китимат

Looking for some of the best Salmon action on the planet? Then Kitimat fishing is one adventure you shouldn’t miss out on. Both freshwater and saltwater anglers flock to the Kitimat district to chase their next Salmon or Halibut trophy, and with enviable results.

Explore the honey holes of the Kitimat River, easily accessible from the town of Kitimat, and admire the stunning nature emblematic of this part of the world. Saltwater anglers can venture further offshore, toward the Douglas Channel, the spectacular inland fjord with an even better fishery. A day of fishing on the pristine bountiful waters and nature that will take your breath away, what more could you ask for?

Fishing Spots

Kitimat offers premier river fishing, as well as popular saltwater expeditions, so you can find many different species of Salmon at the end of your line. King of all Salmon, Chinook, comes in colossal sizes, but Coho, Pink, and Chum don’t fall far behind either. Another favorite catch is Halibut, as well as Steelhead, Rockfish, and Lingcod. From April until the end of October is the prime fishing season on both the Kitimat River and in the Douglas Channel, though fishing is possible year-round.

The Kitimat River

British Columbia is full of fishing treasure coves, yet few can measure up to the Kitimat River. Its waters are calm and the abundance of marine life under the surface is enough to keep you on the rod most of the time. There’s an early spring run of Chinook Salmon, but if you want to catch them at their peak, coming out in August is your best option. Summer months are the best time to target any kind of Salmon really, so Coho, Pink, and Chum are all in the cards. Coho Flats and Pump House Pool are the most popular spots for going after Salmon.

Douglas Channel

You don’t have to go all the way to Norway to bask in the beauty of marvellous fjords, just come to the Douglas Channel. This saltwater fishery is the gateway to the Pacific Ocean and a haven for both outdoor and fishing enthusiasts. Here you’ll find a strong Coho and Chinook bite throughout the year, though the locals recommend not to venture too far out during the winter months, because the waters can get quite temperamental and difficult to navigate. If you decide to fish aboard one of many  Kitimat fishing charters, they can get you on the fish any time of the year, but if you’d like to see the best fishing action, visit the Douglas Channel sometime between June and September. Halibut, Coho, and Chinook abound here, and towards the end of the year, so do Pink and Chum Salmon.

Bottom fishing for Halibut is no less exciting that Salmon fishing, especially because these guys can weigh well over 100 pounds. You can reel them in all year, just be ready for a fishing workout – it won’t be easy getting these lunkers from the bottom onto the boat. Lower Dike and Fisherman’s Trail are some of the best spots to catch your next Halibut trophy.

Fishing Tips

  • To attract massive Halibut, use white Chinook Salmon heads or frozen herring, both will work like a charm.

  • Trolling is the name of the game when you’re going after Chinook Salmon, and using silver colored flashers or Shamrock Baitplugs will be most productive.

  • Another good option for targeting Chinook is bottom bouncing combined with a purple Spin-N-Glo rig, King Salmon won’t be able to resist it.

Need To Know

British Columbia is known worldwide for its extraordinary fishing potential, and the government of the province does all in their power to protect this natural resource. Both freshwater and saltwater anglers need to have a valid fishing license before they start fishing. Catch and release is a common practice here, and local captains will encourage you to keep only the fish you intend to eat.

Regulations

You can easily purchase a freshwater and saltwater BC fishing licence online. If you’re going Salmon hunting, you will need a valid Tidal Waters Fishing Licence along with a Salmon Stamp. It’s important to keep the licence with you at all times, especially if you’re just visiting Canada and are a non-resident. Have your licence with you when leaving the country, in case a customs officer or a Canadian Fisheries Officer asks to see it.

Budget

To get the most out of Kitimat fishing, try on a full day fishing trip for a size. With 9–10 hours to explore the waters of the Kitimat area, you’ll have plenty of time to hook something brag-worthy. Prices for full day trips range from CAD 1,350 up to CAD 2,500, depending on the size of the boat and the number of people fishing. For shorter expeditions, prices vary from CAD 400–850.

Getting There

Whatever your favorite means of transport is – car, boat, or plane, coming to Kitimat will be an adventure. You will find the town on the west coast of British Columbia, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and long stretches of woodland. To get to Kitimat from the town Terrace by car, Highway 37 is the fastest route, and the trip will take about 40 minutes. If you'd rather admire the stunning scenery of British Columbia from the water, you can do so by boat or kayak. You will pass majestic fjords and hot springs on your way to Kitimat and M.K. Bay Marina. In case you prefer the bird's point of view on your travels, the Northwest Regional Airport is at your disposal, whether you're flying in from Vancouver or other big cities in the province.

While traveling to the best fishing spots, you can catch glimpses of humpback whales, seals, and the very rare white Kermode bear. You can stop at one of the numerous hot mineral springs to take a dip and relax after a productive day of fishing. With so much to see and experience, Kitimat, with all its beauty and fishing opportunities, could easily become a place you’ll always come back to.

Китимат – сезоны

Январь
North winds will keep you close to shore in January. In the Douglas Channel you can catch smaller Salmon, as well as Cutthroat Trout in the Kitimat River.
Февраль
Water levels are lower on the Kitimat River in February, though the clarity is good. Trout fishing will be productive when using small lures and live bait, and you can catch spring Salmon in the Douglas Channel.
Март

Salmon are still shy in the Kitimat River, but the Steelhead season begins in March, and the bite gets better as the month progresses. Douglas Channel provides good amounts of spring feeding Salmon.

Апрель

Spring is in full swing, and Salmon are moving to the rivers from the Douglas Channel. Coho and Chinook Salmon are the most popular catch, and they can weigh 70+ pounds.

Май

Now is the peak of Steelhead fishing in the Kitimat River, but bear in mind you’re only allowed to keep the hatchery fish. On the saltwater front, Salmon is biting left and right, and you can catch big ones.

Июнь

If you’re coming to Kitimat to hunt Chinook Salmon, June is your month, especially the second half. In the Douglas Channel, you can catch a variety of Salmon – Pink, Chum, Coho, and Chinook.

Июль

The river levels will be higher as the snow melts, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting out and catching copious amounts of Chinook Salmon on the Kitimat River.

Август

The Chinook bite is waning, but no worries, because Coho is about to take the stage. Both in the Kitimat River and in the Douglas Channel, the Coho bite is best after the rain, when the water clears out.

Сентябрь

The first half of September is the peak season for hooking Coho Salmon. Toward the end of the month, the waters are getting murkier, and Coho are starting to become darker, but there’s still plenty to catch.

Октябрь

Heavy autumn rains are raising the river levels, and are also making the water muddy, and fishing more difficult. Coho Salmon is still popular, but most don’t have their silver glow anymore.

Ноябрь

The weather is cooling down, which makes it a bit difficult to chase Salmon or Trout, but you can still cast your line at the head end of the Douglas Channel and hook a Coho or two.

Декабрь

In December, the winds are treacherous and it’s cold on the water, but it could pay off after you catch several big Steelhead. You can also go after jumbo prawns, which are fun to catch and delicious to eat.
