The reason these waters are so rich is the mix of saltwater from San Francisco Bay and freshwater from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. Not only will you find a variety of fish species to target, but you’ll also see some endangered birds in their natural habitat. Bring your binoculars!

The main star of the show in San Pablo Bay is Sturgeon. This water dinosaur can be found in the bay all year, but winter months are the prime time. Striped Bass is another fish you’ll most likely get your hands on. It’s best to go after them from June–November, by trolling. Local specimens usually weigh around 10 pounds, which may not be trophy sizes, but they’re always fun to catch all the same!

You could also land Starry Flounder, Leopard Shark, and White Seabass. For those of you willing to go south of the bay, there’s a chance of catching Halibut, King Salmon, Rockfish, and Lingcod. Not bad for a short boat ride!

To avoid San Pablo Bay’s mudflat shores, most fishing guides depart from Richmond, Paradise Cay, Berkeley, or Emeryville. Trips out of these bayside towns will have you reaching your Halibut and Salmon fishing spots in no time.

Leaving from Fisherman's Wharf passing Alcatraz, seeing the sun come up over the east bay ills, watching the yacht regatta, passing all the freighters and cruise ships, going under the bridges, seeing the rising sun reflected off the skyscrapers; it's a gorgeous place to catch BIG fish.

This trip was a boys trip to San Francisco and we decided to go fishing with Captain David. Fate has it that his deck hand was the same deck hand that helped me pick crabs at the start of crab season. The equipment was top rate, the boat was comfortable, and the instruction was clear. We walked away with more than enough fish, including a nice size halibut. Good eating!!!

Fantastic day fishing!!! The best day of fishing my son and I have ever had. Captain was awesome. Put us on fish everywhere we went. Beautiful scenery and we laughed and talked all day. The sturgeon were biting and OH my goodness do they fight!!! Great trip and I highly recommend a trip with Captain John!!! The boat is fantastic very comfortable. My two sons wanted to catch something in the bay, especially leopard shark. Weather was windy and water conditions muddy. However, Dave and Neil were great and got us into sharks despite the poor conditions. My boys had a wonderful experience. We would definitely fish with them again!

We caught so many fish within the first hour. Captain took us to a spot that didn’t disappoint. The crew was amazing. Very helpful and even gave us some historical facts of monuments near by. We caught fish on our trip, but not as many as we originally hoped. Nonetheless, it was a great day on the water and the few fish we did catch were from a variety of species. We got to learn about a “shovel nosed guitar fish”. We saw bat rays, leopard sharks and 7 gill sharks up close. The captain and crew member were friendly and accommodating and the boat was clean and well maintained.
