The warm pacific waters around Hawaii make for some of the best Blue Marlin fishing in the world. The biggest Blue Marlin ever recorded on rod and reel was caught here on a fishing charter run by Capt. Cornelius Choy. The monster blue weighed 1805 lbs and was landed in June 1970, but it never entered the IFGA record books as its enormous size required it to be reeled in by more than one person. The average size of Blue Marlins caught from the island tends to be larger than average, with over 60 fish weighing over 1000lbs having been recorded here. Kona, commonly known as the 'world capital of Blue Marlin fishing', is host to the annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament every August. The area is famous for world-class skippers, and it is also the birthplace of fishing with artificial lures.
