Once you experience Lake Huron Salmon fishing, you’ll realize why these fish are called “the kings.” Chinook are the largest of the Pacific Salmon species and can reach up to 25 pounds in August. The perfect environment for this fish to thrive is cold, clear, and deep water – just what Lake Huron has. Their upstream migration starts in late summer and this is definitely the time when you want to have your hooks ready.
Where to Fish
Lake Huron is bordered by the Canadian state of Ontario and the US state of Michigan. Great fishing spots can be found on both sides and it’s hard to pick a favorite. If you’ve booked an extended full day trip, you’ll probably have enough time to fish in both states. If you’re crossing the border, make sure to have your passport with you and purchase a non-resident license for the state of Ontario.
Fishing on the US Side
Saginaw Bay is the most popular spot on the American side of the lake. It offers a variety of fish species to target and you can get an easy bite here because it’s the shallower part of the lake. While it may be perfect for Walleye fishing, if you’re targeting Chinook here, you’ll need to head out to deeper waters. As always, the King will search for colder spots.
Another great spot is hidden in the far south of Lake Huron. Head out to the mouth of the St. Clair River when the migration starts – it’s a goldmine.
Fishing on the Canadian Side
On the Canadian side, Lake Huron is split into two bodies of water by Bruce Peninsula – the Main Basin and Georgian Bay. Both sections provide an endless number of ports for anglers and have access to spawning rivers for Salmon.
The advantage of the peninsula is that you can find deep water less than 100 yards from shore. The eastern side has some of the most dynamic trolling water in Huron. The anglers troll close to bluffs, cliffs, and points that are similar to those of the western side of Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
Another asset of Lake Huron is that the local Chinook population hasn’t been spooked by boat pressure. Fish that are actively feeding will be attracted to the boat, making “the waiting game” shorter.
How to Catch Chinook Salmon
The main tactic for open water is trolling spoons and Salmon plugs. The effective technique in spring is fishing with roe under a float. Many anglers fish in the morning or in the evening, focusing on low-light time periods. However, some target Chinook after dark, with glow-in-the-dark spoons.
Battling Chinook Salmon is an excellent rod-bending game but eating it is a story of its own. Whether it’s cooked or smoked, this is a delicacy that shouldn’t be missed!
