Where and When to Go
From the San Francisco Bay to the Oregon border, there are plenty of fishing grounds calling out your name.
The Bay Area
In the summer months, the San Francisco Bay Area comes alive with charter boats taking avid anglers to sea. These shallow waters attract King Salmon from June onwards, giving you the chance to test your skills at the height of the season to land that prized catch.
Bodega Bay
Bodega Bay is the home of sportfishing in Northern California, so it’s no surprise that it’s also home to plenty of exciting and delicious Salmon. From the inshore jetties to the famed “Whistle Buoy,” and even offshore, you can target these prized creatures from spring through summer.
Sacramento River
The largest river in California is also one of the nation’s best for Salmon fishing. Its 256 miles wind through the stunning scenery of national parks, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of Northern California’s nature while fishing. Come in fall to experience the King Salmon run, where you’ll have the chance to land a trophy-sized monster.
The Best of the Rest
There are plenty of other hunting grounds for Salmon fishing in Northern California. Towards the border with Oregon, you can hit up the Six Rivers for King and Coho, while Kokanee Salmon also inhabit some of the area’s rich lakes, such as Tahoe.
What to Expect
No matter what kind of excursion you’re looking for, a Northern California Salmon fishing charter will have you covered. Choose from short trips or long trips, shared trips or private trips, and test your bottom fishing skills, let the trolling lines do the work, or even go fly fishing. You really can do it all here.
Beginners may be better suited to a shorter private charter, where your experienced guide will show you the ropes. Meanwhile experienced anglers can head on trips as long as 10 hours to put your skills to the test time and time again. Naturally, shared charters will save you money, but the prices tend to be pretty reasonable anyway.
How to Prepare
Northern California Salmon fishing charters take place on a range of boats. If you’re fishing the rivers, you may be aboard a drift boat or smaller vessel, while fishing the bay could see you on something as big as an offshore sportfishing boat, so you can also expect a different service on each boat.
Some captains provide drinks, but you’ll more than likely need to bring your own refreshments to make the most of your day out. If you want to try fly fishing, then you may need to bring your own gear, but check with your guide before going.

It’s definitely a morning bite so the earlier, the better. Bite all but died completely by 10:30am. But from 6-10am it was on fire! Had 3 fish in within the first 15 mins.

Not as good fishing conditions as other months, but you can still catch fish. We weren’t able to catch any fish from the dock on Bethel Island where we were staying but much of that was limited by stormy weather. On a bass charter we were able to catch 1 largemouth bass and 1 striped bass. In February fishing is OK but not as good as spring and summer.
