Oswego River Walleye fishing is just one of the reasons why this waterway shines. With opportunities to hook into 12+ lb fish, a trip to the river gives you the opportunity to earn serious bragging rights. It just goes to show that it doesn’t always take a trip to big waters to land a trophy!
Walleye are a coveted target on account of their great taste and fight. You can start targeting them on the river after the season opens on the first Saturday of May, through to March 15. Walleye are available in solid numbers through the open season, however May and June are considered peak months.
The fish are big and there’s lots of them, so heading out on a full day trip is more than worth it. Walleye feed after dark, so book a night trip for your best shot. If you’re fishing in the winter months and willing to brave the cold, try ice fishing! Beginners should opt for a half day guided trip, whereas a full day might be more satisfying for experienced ice anglers.
The Oswego River spans over 23 miles. It passes through several townships including Fulton and Minetto, before emptying into Lake Ontario in the town of Oswego. Some of the best Walleye fishing is in the stillwaters between the Varick Dam and the Oneida River. “The Wall” is also a popular spot for shore anglers.
