The Walleye fishing Lake Erie has to offer is, simply put, exceptional. There’s hardly a better place in the country (some say in the world) to target these coveted game fish. It’s no secret that Lake Erie is “The Walleye Capital of the World,” and the best way to be sure is to cast a line there yourself.
Lake Erie covers the surface of nearly 10,000 square miles – that’s a lot of water for Walleye to thrive. They’re the number one catch on the lake, especially from July–October, when the action is at its best.
That doesn’t mean you can’t go after Walleye when the weather is colder. In the first months of the year, you’ll find Walleye close to shore, where they’ll stick around until April and their spawning season. One of the best spots to catch Walleye is the Western Basin – this is where the magic happens.
Because of Walleye fishing, Lake Erie has an impressive reputation among freshwater fishermen. There are hundreds of local charters that know the lake like the back of their hand and they’re happy to prove it. There’s a huge array of trips at your disposal – from quick half day jaunts, perfect for families, to 8–10-hour expeditions that cover a lot of water and allow you to look for that trophy.
The Walleye action is so impressive that there are several tournaments dedicated to catching them. The Lake Erie Fishing Derby, Big Water Walleye Championship, and Lake Erie Walleye Trail are just a few of the many fishing events that take place during the year.
Lake Erie is vast, so there are many cities and towns to find a guide, so where do you start? Port Clinton, Lakeside Marblehead, Erie, and Sandusky are all great choices for your next Walleye fishing adventure.
