Long awaited snook season opened February 1st and remains open till June 1st. Regulations remain the same with a 28-32 inch slot, 1 per angler. We had a great pompano bite a month ago which lasted about 6 days. Black drum and sheepshead at area bridges. Getting ready to bang on the tripletail. Spanish mackerel are thick just outside the inlet. My mackerel trips I keep to a 4 person max and require seas of 2 foot or less. Macs are here through the end of March. One trip we caught 60 in 90 minutes.

All in one week! Fishing is insane right now with no shortage of action in the sea! Doesn’t matter if you just want a great fight from a veriaty of species, or dial in for the trophies, they are all right in our back yard. No need for hours of running into the deep blue! Find the fishy sections and get ready. Our main bites we were targeting for were all the big name palagics: mahi, sails, tuna, kings, and even plenty of cobia! They are all here waiting to be taken advantage of. Live bait has been great and thankfully pretty easy to load up on. Biggest suggestion is find the birds and/or the explosions of the tuna and Bonita. Stay around there and you should find a verity of species. If you are trolling, don’t be scared to send a white (or your favorite color for fishing) jigs all the way back. This will most likely keep you busy all day with little tunas. This big fish have been taking down our sardines, even though I have been hearing people getting plenty of action on finger mullet. BIG RULE FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR, if the bite isn’t happening as good as it looks, drop the leader size to a smaller test as well as possibly switching to smaller hooks. Inshore is still on fire as well. The cold weather will have all the big girls in our favorite deep holes. Put in the time and take side notes on where bait are crashing, always keep and eye out for the tarpon blowing up. My favorite trips for inshore has been night fishing. Pretty obvious why once you get out there. Not much traffic and A LOT of hungry fish.

It's transition time here on the Treasure Coast with snook moving inshore up the Indian and St. Lucie Rivers. We did have a great summer bite while livebaiting pilchards and greenies on circle hooks. Once the season opened on September 1st, small croakers were available which worked really well. Plenty of slot sized snook 28-32" with some around 40". One of the best tripletail bites in several years catching 138 so far this year up to 24.5 lbs. Live or frozen shrimp on trollrite jigs work the best on 12 lb test. The mullet run is in full swing with tons of baitfish and jacks, tarpon, snook and bluefish chasing them around. We should start seeing some pompano, bonefish and spanish mackerel real soon with and increase of sheepshead, black drum and redfish around the bridges.

What a great time to fish in our region. It’s about to take off beyond belief. Biggest and best bite have been the bottom fishing. Hit any patches anywhere from 30-100ft. Big trick is to make sure you have plenty and a variety of bait. Light leaders is the trick to get the studs in the cooler. Always have some free liners out on the back, even though you might not be able to see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. If you would rather have more visual fun, run to the sand pile and chum up the sharks. The rest will happen right in front of your eyes. With this being said, go with heavy tackle. Nobody wants to feed the sharks our delicious species. Offshore will be a give or take. I have been getting great reports from a bunch of awesome anglers. Everything from tuna, cobia, mahi, sails, and the big one, SWORDS! They are here and ready for some tight line. Closer near shore can be a better day for any angler. Plenty of Spanish mackerel, big blue fish, and jacks. Great fun for all ages, not hard at all to find the fish. You can fish on land and/or just run north or south and look for either a bunch of boats piled up or my favorite, avoid the crowd and drive till you just see them skyrocketing out of the water. Best and easiest lures to use for this is Gotcha lures/ spoons/ neon jigs. They will all work just fine. Get out there and catch some fish. Most importantly, take a kid fishing. Great time of the year here in Stuart to bend those rods and take some fish dinner home. 2017 ended with a great tripletail bite with most fish in the 6-10 lb range but several over 20. Tripletail are in the perch family and about the best eating fish on earth. This year aboard Catch 22, we ended up with 87 of them. With the water releases halted from Lake Okeechobee, salinity has risen bringing in more bait and fish on their tails. The pompano and flounder bite will increase thru April. While targeting pompano, we also catch bonefish and leaping ladyfish. We do spanish mackerel trips till April along the beach when the seas are flat which is always a blast. Still catching nice redfish and snook. Most redfish have been in the 18-27 inch slot with a few over slot to 33". Snook season opens again February 1st. Lots of sheepshead here in the winter and spring along with black drum to 14 lbs.

The larger tripletail have moved into the Stuart area. The snook bite is still good in the St. Lucie Inlet. We continue to see plenty of black drum at area bridges. Sheepshead, spanish mackerel and pompano catches are on the rise and will get stronger into the new year. We have caught over 60 redfish since September with the majority in the slot of 18 to 27" or over. Look for the flounder bite to pick up.
