The Red Fish have arrived! Due to a significant drop in water temperature from 97 degrees to 82 degrees, the Red Fish and other local fish have become more active. This is an opportune time to be out on the water pursuing that once-in-a-lifetime catch. I have found success in catching them primarily using live bait and chunks of cut-bait fish.

Fishing has been on fire lately with plenty of options on what to target. If the cool breezy winds are not too strong then you can find lots of grouper, snapper, cobia, and bonitas (aka false albacore) anywhere from 1-9 miles off the beaches. If you want to experience fishing the inshore waters of Sarasota or the wind doesn’t allow for an offshore adventure then you’ll have no problem finding Snook, Redfish, Sea Trout, or juvenile Tarpon on your fishing trip. This action will be consistent until the stronger cold fronts come down changing the patterns of some of our local species, but one thing you can always count on when fishing with us, you will be sure to get on some Stellar Action.

My client had requested to catch Tarpon during his trip. He said that it was one of the bucket list fish he had always wanted to catch. We left the marina and made a small run to the south where we almost immediately saw pods of Juvenile Tarpon rolling along the shoreline. We set up and began sight fishing the pods but couldn't get the fish to bite. I decided to make a move a little further south and try some Tarpon I had found in another area to see if we could get them to bite. The Tarpon were rolling on the surface and with a few well placed casts we hooked up on his first Tarpon - a beautiful 45# fish. The fish became skittish though and we couldn't get anymore to bite in the area. After about 45 minutes I moved us back into the original area we had started in. The tide had changed and the Tarpon were laid up in a cut along the shoreline feeding on the flowing tide. Over the next hour or so we caught another 6 Tarpon. With only about 20 minutes left on the trip we decided to try for some other species and switched to some structure where we caught some Black Drum and Redfish to close out the day.

Awesome morning fishing for fun-sized Tarpon, Redfish, Snook, and more in the back country with a great family out of Ohio. The kids wanted to try and catch some Tarpon and after a quick run we found them along some mangroves and grass flats. After the Tarpon bite slowed down we switched gears and caught some great numbers of Snook, Redfish, Snappers, and Sheepshead.

Spotted Sea Trout Date: 09/08/2023 Location: Charlotte Harbor, Matlacha Pass and Pine Island Sound. Weather conditions: Temperatures 90 degrees Fahrenheit, mostly cloudy with thunderstorms approaching from the west. Wind speed started off at 3mph and later picked up 15mph. The storm lasted anout 20 minutes and then cleared. Water conditions: clear water, 83 degrees Fahrenheit with an outgoing tide and lite current over the grass flats Overview: The spotted sea trout fishing has been quite productive recently in Charlotte Harbor, Matlacha Pass and Pine Island Sound. We’ve had good catches and exciting fishing experiences targeting these beautiful and prized fish. Catching Spotted Sea Trout: I’ve had success catching spotted sea trout using a variety of techniques. Here are some tips to increase your chances of landing this sought-after species: 1. Time of day: Spotted sea trout are generally more active during dawn and dusk, so consider planning your fishing trips during these times for better success. However, they can be caught throughout the day as well. 2. Bait and lures: Live bait such as shrimp, mullet, or small fish is known to be effective in attracting spotted sea trout. Additionally, artificial lures like soft plastics, topwater plugs, and spoons can also yield fruitful results. Experiment with different colors and sizes to find what works best in your location. 3. Techniques: Casting near grassy areas, oyster beds, or around structure such as docks and bridges often leads to successful trout fishing. Use a slow and steady retrieve to mimic natural prey movement and entice bites. Remember to vary your retrieve speed and depth to find what triggers the trout's interest. 4. Tackle: Spotted sea trout can range in size, so it is recommended to have a medium-light to medium spinning rod and reel combination. Spool your reel with a suitable monofilament or fluorocarbon line in the 8-12 lb range, depending on the average size of trout in your area. Fishing Regulations: Before heading out to catch spotted sea trout, make sure to check the local fishing regulations. These may include size limits, catch limits, and seasonal closures aimed at preserving the population of this popular species. Other Fish Species: While targeting spotted sea trout, anglers can also encounter other species such as redfish, flounder, or snook, providing an opportunity for a diverse and exciting fishing experience. We are still catching good numbers of mangrove snapper as well as a good showing of drag screaming Spanish mackerel. Snook are on the nearshore reefs and in the bay. Big schools of trout have mived into sarasota bay keeping rods bent and smiles all day. Book a charter!
