Summary

Greetings Fishing Booker Community, This past labor day I had the pleasure of fishing with Dave and Dave (longtime friends) from Long Beach California.  We began the day “out back”- South Whitewater Bay looking for rolling Tarpon and immediately found them at our first spot…We threw MirroDine plugs to a school that must’ve had hundreds.  We did so with light tackle rods outfitted with IRT 300 reels, 40 lb. fluorocarbon leader and 20 lb PowerPro braided line.  It wasn’t long before we had some hits but our landing rate was non-existing… We made a quick adjustment, looked for Snook and landed one straight away!  The juvenile Snook ran and pulled drag like a fish twice its size, we landed, photographed it and sent it on its way!  For our last stop (out back) we stopped at a creek mouth that was draining nicely with a falling tide and on his first cast, Dave hooked and over lost Redfish on similar light tackle gear with a GULP soft plastic.  This fish put on quite the show…it ran out of the creek, in the creek, rubbed on an oyster coated mangrove roots and somehow/ miraculously came near the boat where I was able to land it!  On a high note, I powered up my Honda and headed back toward the boat ramp, put my Superkiff on its trailer headed toward the “front” boat ramp.  We quickly transitioned from the backcountry to the front and headed East from Flamingo.  We stopped at a nice grassy flat were we switched our tactics to Speckled Trout and it wasn’t long (like within the first three casts) that we were hooking and landing back to back slot Specks!  Although Dave and Dave weren’t taking any fish home, I talked them into harvesting a few trout which they would later take to the Fish House in Key Largo for a fresh fish lunch.  We closed the ½ charter looking for puppy Drum (Redfish) near an epic looking mangrove shoreline but ended with several slot Grey Snapper instead!  The fish tally totaled:  Snook x4, Speckled Trout x12+, Over slot Redfish x1 and several Gray Snapper.  Indeed a nice day on the water!
