In the past three weeks we have experienced some chilly weather in Florida, with a couple strings of days with nights in the 30s and 40s, dropping water temperatures into the low 50s. With the lower water temperatures we have been focusing our efforts on fish that don’t mind the cold water. Sheepshead has been #1 on the list especially with the peak of the spawn coming in February. Find these guys around structures in the bays such as bridges and docks, and also look for them on the near shore artificial reefs. Using live shrimp on a small hook with a ¼ ounce split shot will get the fish biting. Sheepshead are tasty fish and they are plentiful this time of year. 12 inch minimum to keep and 15 per person bag limit. We have also been experiencing good action on sea trout and pompano using live shrimp on some of the deeper grass edges. The main key to finding the feeding fish is to focus on the areas that have a little bit higher water temperature than the surrounding waters. Fishing up in the river has provided good action on smaller redfish, jack crevelle, and ladyfish. Although the cold fronts make it chilly and windy, the sun has been out most days which has helped to keep the fish from getting too lethargic. The cold winter for us means that fishing in the spring should be outstanding and that is right around the corner!
