MULTI-DAY FISHING ADVENTURES! Part 2 of our recent trip with Kevin & Shannon from Canada in the OSA Peninsula, Southern Costa Rica. Day 1 - Offshore We pushed off from the docks at the Marina Pez Vela, Quepos to commence our 64 mile journey down to Poor Mans Paradise, a few miles south of Drake Bay in the OSA Peninsula. After getting about 30 miles offshore we set the lines and had some non stop action for the first 30 minutes of the day, raising 5 Sailfish, getting 3 bites & releasing 1 Sailfish. We caught a nice sized Jack & could not keep our Baits in the water due to 8-10lb bonitos which kept hitting them, not our target fish but they pull hard! We later found some smaller bonitos for Livebait & as we were retrieving a bonito we had a lit up Sailfish chase it right to the side of the boat which was very cool. We put some live bonitos down over the Reef to look for an Amberjack or Cubera Snapper & had a brief encounter with a Wahoo which destroyed one of our live baits. Kevin also lost a nice fish on the jig and as we called lines in & headed towards the lodge for our first night, reflecting on our first day, we had actually not caught too many fish but it had been an exceptional day on the water with sightings of Whales, Dolphins, Manta Ray's & Turtles. We did some Surf fishing at Sunset looking for a Roosterfish but no luck on that front today... Day 2 - Nearshore/Coastal Kevin had a Roosterfish firmly on his bucket list, so after an early breakfast at the lodge we spent the morning working our way along the rugged coastline casting Poppers & Top water lures from the bow whilst running a couple of 'Lookdown' livebaits from the back of the boat. After some great action with 3 nice sized Roosterfish, plus some Jacks & Mackerel, the guys wanted to change things up in the afternoon and focus on a Wahoo. So we headed out to the Offshore Reef a few miles off Cano Island, where the plan worked out perfectly when we caught 2 nice Wahoo & 4 small Yellow Fin Tuna. This capped off an excellent day with some great species variety & safe to say, dinner at the lodge was excellent that evening! Day 3 - Offshore On our third & final day we took the Offshore route back to Quepos which took us past Cano Island & Furuno Bank. We set the trolling spread a few miles out from Furuno bank & Kevin hooked into a Sailfish within 5 minutes of putting the lines in the water, a great start to the day! After getting some nice photos & releasing the Sailfish, we headed over to the reef at Furuno to load up the Tuna Tubes with bonitos for live bait. Once we had some great sized Baits our Mission for the day was to search for the Tuna & Spinner Dolphin schools. The Tuna were plentiful this day & we managed to find 3 different groups of Tuna in an area of about 8 miles. We lost a lot of nice livebaits to small Tuna before Kevin finally caught a nice sized Yellow Fin of 40lbs. Shannon had battles with two nice sized fish but was unlucky to lose both of them, one literally boatside at the gaff, ouch! The Marlin & Dorado eluded us on this trip but the guys had an excellent time experiencing some of Costa Rica's finest fishing. They both agreed, an experience they will never forget!
