Bottom fishing at it's best!!!!
We went out at about 12.30 and headed for the West end of the Island. The sea was very calm and very little wind. As we approached the point the sea picked up and we encountered 2/3/meter swells but only every 17 seconds, so just wide Atlantic swell.
After rounding the point, we chose our first spot and commenced fishing and was immediately rewarded with a nice Red Snapper. The strange thing is that it took the skippers bait and then immediately took Anna’s bait. So who claims the catch???
We carried on for about 3 hours with everybody getting good fish, ranging from Red Snapper, Grouper, Trigger Fish and Barred Hog fish. After the few fish you see on the photo had been caught we released all other fish whenever possible. On Gavito we strongly believe in fishing in an eco-friendly way and we believe that releasing fish protects the species and encourages breeding to give anglers fish for the future. We returned to Calheta by about 1700 hrs and at that time Anders and Anna, (the new owners of “Gavito”) had to leave for another appointment.
All anglers out there should note that whilst Madeira is a small Island in the middle of the Atlantic, the weather and sea states are usually good throughout the winter. Also the flight costs are low and journey time is only about 3,5 hours from the U.K.
Also please note that whilst the business has been sold Captain Graham Venters will still be running the boat, so as far as anglers are concerned nothing has changed.
Why not try a Winter short break in Madeira and check out the great fishing there.
