MARLIN ON THE FLY - COSTA RICA! What a truly magical day aboard GOOD DAY we had yesterday Fly Fishing in Costa Rica. Toby & McKenzie joined us for their fishy filled honeymoon with the target of trying to release their first Billfish on the Fly. We got two great chances in the morning, the first Sailfish teased perfectly only to fade off in the final seconds as McKenzie cast to it. Toby then got a shot on a super hot Sailfish which again teased perfectly and was aggressive attacking the Fly as soon as Toby made the cast. The Sailfish ate the Fly & came tight for a few seconds before spitting the hook. Super close but no cigar! All hell then broke loose when a Marlin crashed our short teaser (Squidnation pink daisy chain & Black/Blue Island Express). The teaser bite was just insane & what Fly fisherman dream off when targeting a Marlin on the Fly. Three times the Marlin came out of the water sideways as he crashed the teaser, McKenzie then made the perfect cast & had the Marlin circling & attacking the Fly in seconds. On the 3rd attempt to eat the Fly McKenzie got a solid hookup on the fish & the battle commenced! 45 electrifying minutes that were filled with countless jumps, tailwalks & a few heart stopping moments. We finally got the Leader touch, then the Bill & then got the fish tagged for Gray FishTag Research, a stunning Blue Marlin of around 150lbs. All on board were delighted. Those that Fly Fish will know that a Blue Marlin on the Fly is no easy feat! Huge congrats to McKenzie on a true fish of a lifetime! Marlin Fly Fishing in Costa Rica at its finest & we are back out there with the Fly rods tomorrow!
