The weather had changed from a warm gentle breeze to a cold NW wind but we are lucky here at Ramsgate with good inshore sheltered fishing. The crew, mostly new to fishing were up for the challenge. A 45 minute run to fish off Deal on a mussel bed found the doggies there in numbers, not a bad thing for beginners as it gets them used to the tackle, how it works, what bait certain species prefer. Doggies like all bait so it can be difficult to shake them off but we used lugworm and caught and released a few Bass. Another move saw us on some softer ground liked by Thornback rays. Herring is the preferred bait for these fish and we were pleased with some good sized fish with the best a shade under 10lb being a female that was returned although we kept 3 for the pot along with a good Smoothound that was also kept. We tried for mackerel but the water was clouded by the gusty wind so missed out on my favourite eating fish. A busy days fishing in fairly difficult weather and although some of the crew preferred drinking to fishing also being rough on our tackle we managed to find some good fish for the ones that didn't give up.
