Monster kingfish caught
Sunday’s outing was a private trip for family members. We left our dock in Aransas Pass at 7:52 AM, and after a quick stop to pick up bait in Port Aransas, we headed for the Aransas Liberty Ship Reef. This reef is 18 miles out of the Port Aransas jetties and is a large area containing pieces of ships, oil platform and junk iron. Though the area sees a lot of fishing pressure, there always seems to be some good fish caught, and Sunday was no exception. The current was running strong, so the drift lines over the reefs at 100 feet down was swift. With the help of the owner’s nine year old granddaughter, we boxed three nice red snapper pretty quickly. We also set out a drift line with whole mullet on a steel leader with dual hooks. This line kept things jumping with three nice kings. The largest went 54-1/2”—all were released in good condition. The owners wanted a short day so we pointed our nose west just before noon and headed to port. We had the fish cleaned at Woody’s on the way to the dock and made it home for a relaxing afternoon.
