Captain Joel was a wonderful captain. Very knowledgeable and straight-forward about fishing, and easy to joke around with and have fun. We started out by the jetties and caught a couple ribbon fish for cut bait, then went a little further out and drifted for sharks. Got plenty of bites, but only a few good hook-ups, getting 2 gafftops and 2 sand sharks in the boat. Could have been better, but that’s not the fault of the captain at all, just the fish and our group containing mostly inexperienced fishermen. If you don’t know how to use the equipment he has, please ask him or let him handle setting the hooks and getting the bait out! Some of the equipment is fairly old, but still very much functional. The boat was a little small for 6 fishermen, the captain, the deck hand (who was a very nice, very talkative lady), and a cooler, but it’s easily manageable if you don’t mind a little squeezing around each other and you try to avoid the occasional spill due to waves. Overall, Joel is a great laid-back captain for those who want someone who will relax and talk and maybe have a beer with you while you fish. This trip was beyond my expectations due to it being the cheapest all day offshore charter I could find in the area. Joel won’t be doing this for a whole lot longer before he retires, so book a trip while you can!

Took us where the fish keep biting, held a great conversation. Helped us with bait, equipment, and cleaning. Probably the smartest choice to charter with him in Galveston.
