We’ve all heard “It’s getting late let’s move spots to a bit closer to home.” On the Grand Slam you hear Captain Tom give a time check, and fair warning to get a seat for a ride to a small window of fish. I’ve heard it twice in quite as number of trips with Tom. The first time it led us to a Block Island Sound Symphony of tides, moon, and wind that drifted us over the right boulder field. Like the title says, a few minutes into the first drift a 40 pounder freight trained an eel on a circle hook. There was no screaming of not setting the hook, just good solid advice during the fight and a mate always thinking two steps ahead. Next drift same routine. Missed getting right in the water on the next drift and didn’t connect, the drift after lightning struck again. You don’t forget trips like that.
The second time I heard Tom telling us to secure the deck for the dash to Block was a different night. Not a bird, a splash, or a blip of a fish at the point. After finding the only life in the area were random blues or a dog, we started realizing how wrong the weatherman had been. SW 5-10 was W 25, and 2-4 was 8-12 with the tide not playing ball. I’m not an offshore warrior nor a guy that’s scared of chop in the right scenario. I’m also a husband and a dad. The ride home could have gone real wrong without Tom handling a boat that’s built like a tank and can haul ass. Ended up being an at ease trip back while watching the Point flex her muscles.
