My son, Henry, and I wanted to go deep sea fishing , we got a recommendation from the concierge at the Nizuc hotel and booked. It was a shared trip with 3 others, a young lad from the U.S. , an ex US navy engineer and a Mexican who worked in Cancun. All with varying levels of experience , the ex Naval engineer was super keen and had done it many times before, it was Henry and My first time.( but of course now we both talk about it like old hands) We draw straws to see the order of taking the rod once a strike had occurred, I was number 5 , Henry number 3.
We set off , after about an hour, out of sight of land about 18 miles out we put out the lures and went trawling , after a long 15 minutes they started to bite and soon we had all had at least two hauls, Mahi Mahi and Bonita, reeling them in from the bosuns chair each time. We saw some sail fish approach but unfortunately they didn’t bite. The crew were great knew what to do and when, were constantly preparing and cleaning , offering drinks and making sure we were well catered for.
Then we moved onto some deeper fishing, about 60 meters down looking for bigger fish and using some of our earlier catch for bait. It was obvious given the very large hooks, the wire tracers and the huge chunks of fish attached to them that this was not a meal for anything small.
The first few strikes were Snapper and Red snapper , the catch of the day a 60lbs Grouper.
Great day, really good company, fun to talk to others from different backgrounds and countries and everyone very happy. Importantly the crew made it easy, made us feel like experts and regardless of experience made it fun and exciting for everyone.
It was a good father and son bonding opportunity, worked really well.
We will definitely do this again and not hesitate to go back to the same boat given the chance.
P.s. I caught the Grouper!
