What to Expect
The most popular species to target using this technique has to be the mighty Salmon, and you’ll find all five Pacific varieties here – Coho, Chinook, Chum, Sockeye, and Pink.
If you’re a newer angler, charter captains recommend heading to Carroll Inlet, located close to the center of town and jam-packed with different Salmon. It’s the perfect place for short-range trips, and will give you time to learn the basics of fly fishing before testing your skills.
More experienced? I really all depends on what your personal preferences are. The waters of Clarence Strait can get rough, but offer up huge King Salmon. Nature lover? The misty, magical waters of Boca de Quadra are a must-visit, while Tongass National Forest’s maze of lakes and creeks provides true escapism for freshwater fanatics.
How to Prepare
Generally, Ketchikan’s fly fishing season doesn’t open until May, and lasts until around late October. You’ll need to purchase a valid Canadian fishing licence, as well as stamps for certain species, and should bring or rent your own fly fishing rods and flies. What’s included in your trip, however, is something invaluable: a local’s insight into these incredible waters, and a fly fishing adventure you’ll remember for years to come!
